Make practice a manageable routine
You do not need to tackle all three subjects in one sitting. Give each test time for a thoughtful review.
Start with short, untimed sets.
Year 4 children tire quickly on long papers. Begin with ten or so questions, no clock, and ask your child to say why each answer is right.
Review the reason, not just the mark.
For each wrong answer, decide whether the problem was understanding the passage, choosing a method, or reading the question too fast. Then try one new question of the same kind.
Give Thinking Skills its own time.
It is the section most children have never met at school. Short, regular practice at spotting what a question establishes, and what it only suggests, does more than one long session.
Add timing last.
Once the method is secure, introduce timed sets and talk about when to move on from a hard question. Keep ordinary reading for enjoyment in the week as well.
Turn results into useful next steps
Understand the answer, not just the score.
A finished test is a chance to spot what is going well and where a little more practice could help. Keep the conversation focused on how your child reached an answer.

Who is this practice for?
Year 4 students preparing for the NSW Opportunity Class placement test. The practice covers Reading, Mathematical Reasoning and Thinking Skills, with explanations to review together after each test.
What is included in the complete bundle?
Tests 1–8 in each of the three subjects: eight Reading, eight Mathematical Reasoning and eight Thinking Skills tests. That is 24 subject tests in total. The bundle costs AUD $59, paid once, with 12-month access for one child. These are the same tests sold individually; purchasing both does not add new questions.
How many questions are in each practice test?
Each Reading test has 33 answer points across 14 question groups, including three multipart groups. Each Mathematical Reasoning test has 35 questions, and each Thinking Skills test has 30 questions.
How is each practice test timed?
Reading and Mathematical Reasoning each allow 40 minutes. Thinking Skills allows 30 minutes. Each subject has its own test, timer and submission, so you can practise one subject at a time.

What happens after a test?
