The NAPLAN reading test assesses how well students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 understand written texts, and in 2027 it runs within the national window of 10 to 22 March. Results are reported against four proficiency levels, from Exceeding to Needs additional support.
This guide explains how the online test works, what the levels mean, why NAPLAN matters more than many parents expect for selective-school applications, and simple reading practice for each year level.
How does the NAPLAN reading test work?
NAPLAN reading is an online, adaptive test: the questions your child sees get harder or easier depending on how they answer. It sits alongside writing, conventions of language and numeracy, and all four are aligned to the Australian Curriculum.
According to ACARA's guide for parents and carers, a child who finds the questions getting harder may simply be on a more complex pathway because they are doing well. That is worth telling an anxious child before the test. Year 3 writing is still done on paper; the other tests, including reading, are online.
When is NAPLAN in 2027?
The 2027 test window is 10 to 22 March, as published on the official NAPLAN key dates page. Your child's school sets the exact days within that window and will tell you in advance.
Because NAPLAN now runs in March, the reading test reflects what your child brings into the year rather than what they learn during it. That makes regular reading through the summer holidays more useful than any last-minute practice.
What do the four proficiency levels mean?
Each result is placed in one of four levels that describe how a student is going against challenging but reasonable expectations at the time of testing. Levels are reported separately for each test and year level.

These descriptions paraphrase ACARA's results and reports page. On the individual report, your child's result is shown as a black dot, the national average as a black triangle, and the middle 60% of results as a shaded box. Some states also show the school average.
National results for 2026 were released on 5 August 2026. Individual reports come through your child's school, and release dates vary by state. If you don't receive one, contact the school, as ACARA cannot provide individual reports.
Why does NAPLAN matter for selective-school entry?
Some Queensland selective programs ask for NAPLAN reports as part of an application, so a NAPLAN result can follow your child into a selection process. That is a good reason to understand the report, not a reason to coach for it.

Should your child practise for NAPLAN?
A little familiarity helps; heavy preparation does not. ACARA does not recommend excessive preparation or coaching services for NAPLAN, and teachers make sure students know the question types before the test.
The most useful step is free. ACARA's public demonstration site lets your child try the question types and on-screen tools in the online tests, linked from the parents and carers page. Ten minutes there removes most of the surprise.
Beyond that, the reading habits below do more than practice tests, because reading comprehension builds slowly through regular, varied reading. Our own NAPLAN practice page is in development, and we would rather point you to the official demonstration site than sell you something you don't need.
How can you help with reading at each year level?
Read varied texts together and ask questions that send your child back to the text for evidence. Adjust the length and difficulty of the text more than the type of question.
These are teaching suggestions, not official year-level standards.
Year 3
Short stories, simple information texts and picture books with some challenge. After reading, ask three kinds of question: what happened, which words tell you, and why a character felt a certain way. Keep it conversational. The aim is pointing to the sentence that supports an answer.
Year 5
Longer stories, short articles and texts with diagrams or tables. Add questions about word meaning in context and the main idea of a paragraph. Our guides to context clues and cause and effect give worked examples at this level.
Year 7
Mix fiction, opinion pieces and explanatory texts. Ask what the writer wants the reader to think and how they try to achieve it. Compare two short texts on the same topic. See our guide to critical reading for an original worked example.
Year 9
Longer and denser texts, including persuasive writing and literary passages. Discuss tone, viewpoint and how a paragraph contributes to the whole. Poetry and figurative language are useful practice for close reading.
How should you read your child's NAPLAN report?
Read it alongside school reports and what you see at home, not on its own. One result from one day in March is a snapshot, and the proficiency level matters more than small differences in the dot's position.
If the result surprises you, ask your child's teacher whether it matches classroom work. A Developing result in a child who reads confidently at home may reflect test conditions or a single difficult text, while a pattern across years deserves a conversation about support.
