Year 7 NAPLAN runs from Wednesday 10 March to Monday 22 March 2027, about six weeks after your child starts high school. They sit four online tests: writing, reading, conventions of language and numeracy. Reading and numeracy are longer than in Year 5, and numeracy now includes a calculator section.
The timing is the hard part. Your child is getting used to a new school, new teachers and a new timetable, and NAPLAN arrives before most of that has settled.
The four Year 7 tests
| Test | Time | Format | What it covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Writing | 42 minutes | Online, typed | One narrative or persuasive piece |
| Reading | 65 minutes | Online, adaptive | Longer literary, persuasive and information texts |
| Conventions of language | 45 minutes | Online, adaptive | Spelling, grammar and punctuation |
| Numeracy | 65 minutes | Online, adaptive, two sections | Non-calculator section first, then calculator allowed |
Writing is on 10 March 2027, then reading, conventions of language and numeracy.
Numeracy: the non-calculator section
Year 7 numeracy starts with a non-calculator section. Once your child moves into the calculator section, they can't go back. In the second section an on-screen calculator, ruler and protractor become available.
Two things catch students out:
- Weak mental arithmetic. Students who lean on calculators at school lose easy marks in the first section. Practise times tables, fraction and percentage conversions, and quick estimation.
- Rushing the first section. Because it's locked, any skipped question stays skipped. Encourage your child to answer every question before moving on, even with a best guess.
Topics include integers, fractions, decimals and percentages, ratios and rates, simple algebra, area and volume, angles, and probability. See our guides to word problems and perimeter, area and volume.
Writing
The task is narrative or persuasive, revealed on the day. At Year 7 level, markers expect:
- a clear structure with deliberate paragraphing
- a controlled, consistent voice
- varied sentences, not just long chains joined with "and"
- precise vocabulary rather than "good", "bad" and "very"
For persuasive writing, NAPLAN rewards a direct, personal voice. Phrases like "I believe" and addressing the reader as "you" are fine here, even though many high school essays treat them as errors. Read our Year 7 to 9 persuasive writing guide and our NAPLAN writing prompts.
Reading
At 65 minutes, Year 7 reading is a stamina test. Texts are longer and include opinion pieces, poetry, extracts from novels and multi-modal texts with images. Questions focus on inference, the author's purpose, tone and how language choices create effect.
Students who read only on screens often struggle with long texts. Twenty minutes of reading a day, including non-fiction and opinion articles, is the best preparation. See our NAPLAN reading guide by year level.
Conventions of language
Spelling is tested by audio dictation and proofreading. At Year 7, grammar questions cover clauses, sentence boundaries, subject and verb agreement, and punctuation such as semicolons, apostrophes and commas around clauses. See our language conventions guide.
Does Year 7 NAPLAN matter?
NAPLAN doesn't count towards school grades, but Year 7 results can matter for:
- Queensland Academies Year 10 entry, which asks for all available NAPLAN reports
- selective and gifted programs in high school that use NAPLAN in their applications
- streaming or extension classes at some schools
It's also your best independent check on how your child handled the move to high school.
A simple preparation plan
- Summer holidays: reading every day, times tables and fraction facts, and typing practice.
- First weeks of Term 1: one typed piece of writing a week, and one short non-calculator numeracy set a week.
- Week before: one full practice set in test order. Keep the rest of the week normal.
Our NAPLAN preparation hub is at /naplan, and our free NAPLAN practice tests are a good way to check the format.
